This aligns with DoD modernization initiatives (JADC2, Proliferated Warfighter LEO architecture, Maritime COMSATCOM, etc.) that seek ubiquitous, resilient links. In fact, AST is explicitly integrated with DoD's Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. The aforementioned SDA contract announcement noted AST's role in accelerating space-based capabilities for the joint warfighter. Hey yall, in one of my investing related communities, there was a guy who claims to have HFT background and currently operating family office saying he anticipated a heavy margin call on the market on this Monday 4/7 from 1. One sided heavy selling pressure on Friday 2. the commodities market drop and asian market drop after the futures market open on Sunday night. So I asked him, how he was able to make the connection that the heavy drop on oil and index futures will cause a heavy wave of selling induced by, specifically, the margin call. I was asking because I was not sure why 1. if the one sided selling pressure on Friday triggers a margin call induced selling pressure after the weekend, why wont they be already triggered on Friday and get liquidated on Friday? 2. Is it the correct causal order? How did this guy can point out some selling pressure is from margin call? I wasn't even asking that deep, just asking what kind of background or experience did this guy have to deduce such cause and effect on margin call, but this guy started flaming on me for breaking the taboo. Like I wasn't supposed to ask anything that relates to the system someone is using for their trade. Yeah I know that, everyone signs nondisclosure policy. But I wasn't like asking what his system is or what kind of approach he is using for his firm. Just asking how he was able to pinpoint a heavy selling morning market as caused by "margin calls".

Apple and Musk Clash Over Satellite Expansion Plans - WSJ

1) No one wants to work with Musk nor do they trust him. Handset mfgs like Apple and Samsung and a majority of global MNOs are working with AST SpaceMobile or other solutions NOT named Starlink. While Starlink looks like a fun marketing partner to work with today, T-Mobile will FIND OUT in the not too distant future of the repercussions of the Faustian bargain it struck. 2) In this WSJ article, Apple specifically states "These satellite features are designed to complement carrier offerings, giving users even more ways to stay connected." This coupled with GSAT CEO Paul Jacob's repeated comments that no one wants broadband satellite connectivity suggests to me that Apple/GSAT is not going to compete directly with Apple's MNOs partners and will primarily be focused on narrowband/IoT apps. @Megaconstellati also pointed out in a recent Apple FCC filing that it's looking to split up GSAT's spectrum into 3mhz chunks, which would support texting and maybe voice, but not broadband. 3) It's been pretty well known that Apple and others have had talks with EchoStar about its spectrum. The big issue is that EchoStar CEO Charlie Ergen is notoriously difficult to work with (another guy nobody trusts). Under an EchoStar working relationship, who will pay for the buildout of the constellation and who will control it? EchoStar's market cap is $7B and it has $29B of debt. This WSJ article suggests that Apple has talked with other players ... my guess is that Apple is talking to AST SpaceMobile and looking to make an investment, but we won't know anything about it until perhaps months from now. Ligado's 45mhz of US/Canadian spectrum utilized by an AST SpaceMobile midband BlueBird constellation would be a very attractive platform for Apple to invest in and utilize. This platform would then be well positioned to consolidate and deploy S- and L-Band spectrum globally *in partnership with Apple's MNO customers*. 4) Naysayers have poo pooed the commercial opportunity for broadband satellite direct-to-device service. For a "small and niche" service, there sure is a hell of a lot of strategic interest from every global MNO (AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange, Telefonica, etc), Apple, Google, Samsung, American Tower, Starlink, and more. The largest players out there want a piece of this massive opportunity and at a minimum, are trying their hardest not to be locked out.

I find the wording to #3 interesting. Speculation territory but AST seemed to dodge saying something like "Yes, a spectrum consent letter will be filed". Notes about CatSE Space about BB 2 (FM1)

Controlsat moved out of center position = more simple unfolding. Less risky. Permanent change for BB2s. (this is known from filings) They believe the control sat will most likely be in the corner so it’s only unfolding in 2 directions per array/panel. Array is 3.6x’s larger. But individual sections are 6.6m2 instead of 0.8m2 like BW3 and BB1s. So they cut down the number of elements with hinges to less than half. A less complex fold. This way it scales. They could go larger now. Different configurations for mid-band and c-band can now be used with this panel-configuration. The controlSat is 1.6 Meters tall! It’s a barrel. He believes the Array and Solar Panel are tucked IN the controlSat for launching. So they’re Barrels that can stack in the rocket. Makes the satellite rocket-agnostic. The phased array is still the exact same design. Just bigger. It will do the same thing. The differences are a moved ControlSat and a trailing solar panel. BB2 has a much more complex beamformer tech, as there are a lot more antenna. Takes more power. Hence the added Solar Panel. (the “top” side of the phased array is also a solar panel). Also helps power any 'added' tech on the controlSat for 3rd party applications (read: DoD) Solar panel adds weight, but stability. It can do a barrel roll independently. The phased array has to be parallel to the Earth beneath it. Rotating the solar panel can help capture more direct sunlight. Speculation: They might add a mid-band array to the bottom of the solar panel. Or C-Band – and/or govt. They just got more satellite ‘real estate’ for additional phased array. FCC new rules : You cannot shed the LVA anymore. They’re trying to limit the orbital debris in LEO. Keeping the LVA is new weight. AST is using the ControlSat as the LVA, with some added brackets. Starlink’s D2C is 3x’s the weight/m2 of phased array. They will not be able to go much higher in altitude. Our phased array has 16x more efficient signal. And 1/3 of the weight per phased array unit. The added weight of the satellite was used as a ‘dispenser’ in BB1s which was shed and burned up in the atmosphere. By incorporating it into the satellite design, it offsets the phased array that’s 3x heavier. Which means: F9 can still launch 4 of these. Also: speculating: they’re inserting them at 500km. Test them there. And then raise them to 700km. That way if they are “duds” they can deorbit them. Prevent ‘duds’ flying in space. Regulatory LOVES this. Low-risk decision.

FORMER SENIOR STARLINK DIRECT-TO-CELL MANAGER: "There's different reasons why telcos sign up for a service like this. T-Mobile is a very, very unique case. The genesis of all this, if you remember, was Apple was due to announce their satellite service. Elon called together a quick press conference, got everybody on stage and announced that T-Mobile and Starlink would do the same. Now, there was some efforts internally to bring this to market, but really the fire that accelerated all this was the Apple announcement. T-Mobile, very, very historically, tends to be a huge marketing machine. What they're looking to do and what their financials have shown is that they're very good at adding subscribers. Now traditionally, that would be through having free HBO or Apple TV+. This is yet another thing that they offer to try and attract customers. Their view on this tends to be more on what is the customer acquisition story? What does it cost us to do that? What is the cost of churn as people leave? What can we do to have people in the highest ARPU bucket? The other thing to note is they're very much tying it down to particular kinds of devices. A lot of the U.S. telcos tend to make money also through device financing. Forcing an upgrade cycle in a market where upgrade cycles have been pretty slow is a good incentive for them as well. A partnership like T-Mobile, for example, isn't as worried about the number of messages or the amount of data. It's more, what is the brand value of somebody like SpaceX, Elon, and Starlink and how does that complement the T-Mobile brand and how does that increase awareness or get more people interested in joining? Very, very different for T-Mobile."

FORMER SENIOR STARLINK DIRECT-TO-CELL MANAGER: "I think one thing that you'll see with AST SpaceMobile is because of the way they're set up, there will be partners out there that absolutely make better sense to go with AST SpaceMobile. There's a few reasons for this. One is some people just hate Elon and Elon's game, and they absolutely don't want to do business with somebody that they perceive as being volatile or that doesn't have any business ability, if you will. There's going to be a subset of people that will never want to get in business there. There's another subset of people. Telcos historically are used to being the top dog in negotiations. When they work with Ericsson or Nokia or whatever, they're buying in volume, they're putting a lot of money in. They like being the top dog. When you work with Starlink, you're very much not. For people that want to exercise a lot of control and to make sure that they can oversee every single detail, Starlink doesn't operate as a vendor in the way that other OEM manufacturers or vendors operate. The dynamic is not easy for everyone to stomach. The third reason is the architecture that we talked about. If you're just another tower within the larger system that they have, they have full control. If you're a roaming partner who's also using your own spectrum, that changes the dynamic in terms of how much control you're yielding over and also the ability to have the finer customer service experience that telcos may want to have even if they don't deliver. That's going to be a lot harder with somebody like Starlink. Different reasons, all that to say, I wouldn't write AST SpaceMobile off. There's a lot of market participants that would benefit from that. I think a lot of people have signed these because it doesn't cost them anything or some of it is like, "Hey, we make an investment in you, but then you buy our infrastructure." There's a lot of like, "You scratch my back," kind of deals. At the end of the day, I think it's going to be, can they launch all the birds? Can they show a reliable service and what are they charging for it? I think that's going to be the biggest question to make sure that the bills match all the revenue coming in. I think when you're somebody like Starlink, where you have other lines of business, telco looks at that and says, "I'm not as worried you'll fold," versus AST SpaceMobile has a material risk that may or may not exist."

The analyst commented, "Results came in mostly in-line with management 4Q24 guidance (~$30-35m non-GAAP opex, ~$100m capex) with AST heavier on opex, but lighter on capex numbers.
